Monday’s Telegraaf, (a popular Dutch daily) carries an interview with Maastricht mayor Gerd Leers in which he says that alcohol is as dangerous to society as hard drugs.

The government focuses too much on reducing the use of soft drugs such as marijuana, he adds.

‘Every year one user of hallucinogenic mushrooms jumps out of a window and, say, five people die from other drugs – but tens of thousands of lives are ruined by alcohol abuse,’ Leers tells the paper. Alcohol, he says, is part of society. ‘But open the newspapers on Monday morning and they are full of all the drink-related incidents the police had to deal with at the weekend: illegal drinking dens in the countryside, kids drinking themselves unconscious, violence, vandalism… and alcohol is involved in eight out of 10 instances of domestic violence.’

The mayor calls on the government to put more effort into stopping alcohol abuse and come down hard on excessive drinking.
