Analysis by Richard Cowan

Although my libertarian politics are very different from the Kennedys’ liberalism, I think that everyone should respect the fact that they have been relentless champions of the poor and oppressed.

However, today’s news that Senator Kennedy has brain cancer is an ironic reminder of one source of oppression that the Kennedys have not opposed: the Drug War.

Over the weekend he suffered two seizures, and the AP reports that tests “showed a tumor in Kennedy’s left parietal lobe. Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma… and the usual course includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy.”

As it happens, there have been several studies showing that glioma cells can be killed by cannabinoids.

and links.

Incredibly, at least one of these studies was suppressed by the US government.

Let me emphasize that my point is not that Kennedy might be cured by consuming copious quantities of cannabis, although that might help him through the chemo.

However, had the medical potential of cannabis not been suppressed to satisfy the needs of the Drug War’s prohibitionist propaganda, scientists might have developed ways of using cannabinoids to treat this type of cancer that would be far more effective than the treatment that he is going to have to endure.
